Window Treatments for a Historic Property

Honouring Heritage Through Detailed Design

Historic homes carry aspecial charm, shaped by architecture, craftsmanship and the passage of time. Every design decision within such spaces must respect what already exists, allowing contemporary comfort to sit harmoniously alongside original character.

In this project beautifully designed  by Cache Studio, window treatments have been approached with exactly that philosophy: integrating modern functionality while preserving the spirit of the home.

A Modern Solution within a Heritage Setting

Roller blinds are often associated with clean-lined contemporary interiors. Yet, when thoughtfully designed, they can sit beautifully within period properties.

For this installation, discreet roller blinds were selected for their simplicity, refined appearance and effortless usability. The key lay not in contrast, but in adaptation — ensuring the system felt considered rather than imposed.

By stripping back unnecessary detail, the focus remained on proportion, light and materiality.

Bespoke Aged Bronze Components

Rather than relying on standard fittings, bespoke aged brass components were introduced throughout the project. The softened patina allowed each blind to sit naturally against original architectural details, echoing existing metalwork and timber tones found throughout the house.

These subtle elements transform the perception of the blind — moving away from a purely modern association and establishing a more timeless presence. The result is a window treatment that feels as though it belongs to the property rather than competing with it.

Light, Texture and Atmosphere

Across dining, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom spaces, light control was approached with restraint. Fabrics were chosen to diffuse daylight gently, preserving privacy without creating heaviness.

The roller blinds act quietly in the background:

  • softening strong daylight

  • allowing architectural details to remain prominent

  • creating a calm, uninterrupted rhythm across the interiors

The neutral palette complements natural timber, painted cabinetry and original structural elements, reinforcing the home’s relaxed elegance.

A Cohesive Interior Story

While each room serves a different purpose, continuity was important. The same design language carries throughout — minimal roller blinds, bespoke detailing and carefully considered proportions — ensuring cohesion without repetition.

From the dining room’s soft, filtered light to the tranquil bedroom setting, every treatment contributes to an atmosphere that feels calm, refined and authentic to the building’s history.

Respecting the Past, Living in the Present

This project demonstrates that modern window treatments need not feel out of place in historic homes. With thoughtful detailing and considered material choices, contemporary solutions can honour heritage while offering practical comfort for everyday living.

For VENESTRE, the goal is always the same: to design window treatments that quietly enhance a space, allowing architecture and atmosphere to lead.
